India imposes new tariffs and bans exports of certain types of rice

INDIA IMPOSES NEW TAXES AND BANS EXPORTS OF CERTAIN TYPES OF RICE FROM SEPTEMBER 9, 2022

On September 8, 2022, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade of India issued Notice No. 31/2015-2020, deciding to ban the export of broken rice (HS code 1006 40 00), effective from September 9, 2022.

Some shipments may continue to be exported until September 15 if they meet one of the following conditions:

(i) Goods began being loaded onto ships before this notice;

(ii) Bills of lading have been issued and ships have arrived and anchored at Indian ports, and the ship’s loading order has been allocated;

(iii) The shipment was transferred to Customs before notification and was registered by Customs in the system.

In addition, on September 8, 2022, the Indian Ministry of Finance also issued Notice No. 49/2022-Customs, effective from September 9, 2022, regarding the imposition of a 20% export duty on certain types of paddy rice such as:

(i) Paddy rice (HS 100610)

(ii) Brown rice (HS 10620)

(iii) Other types of rice except parboiled rice and Basmati rice (HS 10063090)
