CMA-CGM Announces Overweight Surcharge for Asia to Northern Europe Route

CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company by volume, has announced the application of a new Overweight Surcharge (OWS) on its Asia-Northern Europe route. This new surcharge will officially take effect from September 15, 2022 (loading date) until further notice.

This surcharge will apply to all 20′ dry containers (20’DC/DV/GP) loaded from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong & Macau to Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Poland & the Baltic Sea.

The OWS surcharge is USD 150/20’DC for containers with a total weight equal to or greater than 20 tons.

Container Gross Weight = Gross Cargo Weight + Tare Weight (Outside Container).

On average, a 20′ container has an outer tare weight of 2.23 tons. Therefore, customers can only check the total weight of goods inside the container to avoid incurring excess weight surcharges of 17.77 tons.
